Panic in Tuticorin as Sulphuric acid leaks from the Sterlite Copper unit.
Panic had spread in the city of Tuticorin when sulphuric acid gas began to leak from the Sterlite Copper unit. It had been the alertness of the security guards who had noticed the leakage during their rounds and immediately informed the officials of the same. It had just been last month when 13 people had been killed in a police firing during the protest against the expansion of the Vedanta's unit.
Different stakeholders have been reacting differently. The collector of the city has informed all that the situation is under control with no possibility of any casualties. Security has been made up better in and around the unit since the police fear another public protest session. The owners have been on a constant basis requesting the government officials to allow entry into the plant for regular maintenance of the machines as well as to avoid any further such leakages and related problems.
The management is of the opinion that such problems have been arising due to the lack of regular maintenance audit which has not been happening post the sudden seal on May 28, 2018.
